Sleep disorder

by John B Galt

Sleep disorder is a term used for any condition that disrupts normal sleep-wake patterns. Sleep disorder clinics often are able to help people restore normal sleeping patterns through various techniques. Sleep disorders in children are a lot more common than you may think--and that's the problem. Sleep disorders affect all age groupsFew people are aware that sleep disorders exist at every age level from the sudden infant death syndrome to sundowning in the elderly. Sleep disorders are not contagious and pose no risk to others.

Sleep

Sleepwalking or somnambulism: Engaging in activities that are normally associated with wakefulness (such as eating or dressing), which may include walking, without the conscious knowledge of the subject. Sleepiness is responsible for innumerable car crashes, accidents on the job, and missed educational opportunities in the classroom. Sleep hypnosis can help in the treatment of various sleep disorders such as bed wetting and insomnia. Sleep apnea is a breathing interruption during sleep. Sleep apnea is a very serious sleep disorder and can be life-threatening.

Disorders

The most common sleep disorders include:Bruxism: The sufferer involuntarily grinds his or her teeth while sleeping. A sleep diary can be used to help diagnose, and measure improvements in sleep disorders. Treatments for sleep disorders generally can be grouped into three categories: 1) behavioral/ psychotherapeutic treatments, 2) medications, and 3) other somatic treatments. Some sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy, are best treated pharmacologically, whereas others, such as chronic and primary insomnia, are more amenable to behavioral interventions. The management of sleep disturbances that are secondary to mental, medical, or substance abuse disorders should focus on the underlying conditions. For most sleep disorders, behavioral/psychotherapeutic and pharmacological approaches are not incompatible and can be effectively combined to maximize therapeutic benefits.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. Insomnia is a significant lack of high-quality sleep. Insomnia may be caused by stress, a change in time zones or sleep schedule, poor bedtime habits, or an underlying medical or psychiatric condition. Insomnia is prevalent in people suffering with chronic arthritis. Insomnia almost always affects job performance and well-being the next day. Insomnia tends to increase with age and affects about 40 percent of women and 30 percent of men. Insomnia was clearly not a new problem and countless numbers of people had faced it, and dealt with it, over hundreds of years. Insomnia, the most common form of sleep complaint, requires assessing and treatment of the cause (or causes) rather than insomnia itself.

Sleep disorders are a group of conditions characterized by disturbance in the amount, quality, or timing of a person's sleep. Sleep disorder clinics often help people return to normal sleep patterns. Sleep disorders can also be caused by foods containing monosodium glutamate, food allergies, and spicy foods, and are heavy meals to stimulate and prolonged digestion. Sleep disorders can be primary in which there is a defect in the sleep timing mechanism (sometimes called sleep architecture) called dyssomnias and by parasomnias which includes nightmare disorder. Sleep disorders are a 24-hour condition that affect the person all day, not just at night.
